I'm
not sure if anyone will know what I'm talking about,
but I think this drum tip will help especially when it
comes to drum patterns that require constant back and
forth switching between the Hi-Hat and bass drum pedals.
I am currently learning the drum pattern for "The
Final Countdown" by Europe, and the drum tabs for
this song provide an example of that back and forth switching.
Anyway, what I've done so far is broken the drum pattern
apart, separating what I have to do with the drum sticks
from what I have to do with my feet. First, you want to
look at the drum stick pattern, especially if you have
to tap the Hi- Hat with a drum stick, and your foot pattern
separately, and get the feel of each. Seeing what you
have to do with the Hi-Hat and bass drum pedals should
give you a rythm pattern in which you can tap your feet.
Once you've got the feel of both patterns, drumstick and
foot, it should make it easier to concentrate more on
your foot pattern, since feet are harder to move when playing
the drums. If you want to try putting it together, but
can't get to a drumset, it's easy to listen to the song
you are learning to play the drum pattern for and go through
your foot rythm in your head while practicing with your
hands, whether it be on a piece of furniture or playing
air drums! It's also a good idea to practice your foot
pattern on the floor every now and then, just so you don't
forget, especially if you don't have a drumset just yet.
One more drum tip I'll point out to beginners and amateurs
who haven't triad this yet, and this one I got, too, from
my "Final Countdown" drum tabs: Have you ever
tried squeezing a beat of the bass drum in between two
Hi-Hat strokes? It's quite easy, actually. All it is is
a very quick bit of the back and forth switching I talked
about. Just start with your left foot, pretending to push
the Hi-Hat pedal, then your right foot, pretending to push
the bass drum pedal, then your left foot again, but do
it all very quickly. Hope my tips help! - Breanne Carlson

For
double bass, sometimes it's easier to pur your foot
near the end of the kick platforms with only your toes
doing the work. It makes it a lot easier to spit out doubles
and sometimes 32nd notes on Pearl kicks. For Gibraltar
kicks, it helps to put your foot all the way up until
your toes touch the chain or drive. Use the heel-toe technique
for this. Another tip for Gibraltar kicks is to move half
your foot off the pedal to gain speed. Playing without
shoes helps too. - Travis

As
I said on my previous tip, I'm not sure if it makes
sense, unless you're more of a drum tab reader like
me,but I'll add one more tip that I'll agree with anyone
else on: COUNT!!! It helps a lot! After writng your
counting down on your drum tabs or music, all you have
to do is look how many times you have to count before
either repeating a part of the pattern or moving on.
If you practice your drumstick and foot patterns separately
and count while practicing each, you'll be able to put
it all together next time you practice on a drum set!

To
get a good tom/snare/bass sound- Do that following.
To get a good tom sound, first take the bottom heads
(resonance heads) off. Then, still keep the batter head
on. The removal of the resonant head lets you get a
better sound out of your tom. Plus, the tuning of it
is much more easier. Now for the damening part. This
is the easiest thing to do. Go out to a local music
store that has percussion equipment and buy some Moongels.
They totally cut the stupid ring out that you get when
you play. Put one on the 1st tom, 1 on the 2nd Tom,
and 2 on the floor tom.
To
get a very awesome snare sound, tighten up the top and
botttom heads almost as far as they can go. Then, adjust
the muffler so that the drum will have some sort of
a ring. This is a really good sounding poppy sound.
It's similar to what the drummer for Avenged Sevenfold
has(His name is The Rev).

Now finally, for all you people out there. To get the
shweetesh bass drum sound do this. Take some duct tape
and put it around the edges of the batter head on the
inside. Then, put another layer of it on the tape that
you laid on there. And lastly, put a tiny pillow in
there to muffle the sound up a bit.
And there you have it. The best dang tips you will get
on this site. (By the way I'm 13.) Peace Peace everyone
and good drumming
to all of you. - JASon NEwcOmEr

What
ALL drummers should DEMAND from their drumsticks:
Regardless of what the name brand is, make sure they
are straight (no warpage), that they are weight-paired
& pitch-paired. Vic Firth, Pro Mark, Vater, Silverfox,

(regarding computer analysis of each stick). - Kevin

Keep
a binder (3-ring or whatever works)with information
that you'll use at practices and gigs. Make notes about
songs, what to do and at what part of the song, especially
when learning a new song. Type up those notes on your
computer, and make a copy to put into a plastic document
sleeve in your binder. Works great for performance song
lists too. Use button size Neodymium magnets to hold up
song notes or song lists onto cymbal or mike stands or
other metal parts of drums. Neo-magnets are very strong
and will keep documents (and the plastic sleeves they
are in) from falling or flying away, even during windy
outside performances. Other things to keep in your binder:
lyrics, internet search maps & directions to gigs,
band mate telephone numbers, sheet music, etc. - A.J.

Faster
Double bass...What can we say about it? It can be
hard. Their is a new technique about player faster..Heal-
Toe action. Shoes off! Place toe on top of the pedal,
Heal in middle. Lift heal then bring down, then bring
toe up then down. You'll get it in 5-10minutes. Keep trying.

Electronic
Kits are under-rated! They take less space, don't
require mics (or leads!), skins last years, no tuning
problems, no feedback problems for gigs or recordings,
most have built in metronomes, and the sound per dollar
is just about better than the sound per dollar on an
acoustic kit. A great choice for a second kit for practice,
rehearsal, teaching, and quick recordings. - Shakedaddy

A
COOL THING TO LEARN- Practice crossing your arms while
playing on different tom toms. This can be very helpful
once you get it down because it will cause you to not
have to move around the set so much. And it will also
help when you need to add fills in the middle of your
session. So always remember... Practice makes Perfect.
Trust me This works like a crarm. ROCK ON!!! - Noodle

Depending
on how you aready play.... I have found it much
easier to hit the floor tom by tilting it slightly down
towards the floor and turn the tilted side to face my
body. I was just experimenting one day and tried it.
So its a good thing to experiment with your set. ROCK
ON!!! - Noodle

as much ruddiments as you can and train it on a very
slow tempo, put 60 bpm for example and play it until you
got the exact feel of the rudiments you play and then
try to aply it on snare and toms, combine it and you will
get a variation of fill in with perfect sound and great
tone, try it, works for me.. - barry

When
playing the drums, dont keep your foot flat on the
bass drum pedal, because
(1) Its not that comforable and your ankle starts to hurt
after a few minutes, and
(2) You get much more power and speed if you play the
bass drum pedal with your toes, and your heel in the air.
Trust me, it works. Its helped me pull off difficult drum
beats when i have had to stand in for people in gigs before
with hardly any practice! - Chaz

For all u begining double bass drummers out there
i've got three things to say; 1.dont get discouraged
if u cant rythm of the beaters or cant do 16th notes
for at least 10-15 seconds, and 2nd if you get pains
in your shins or calfs, its perfectly normal and 3rd
dont think that you cant do it because eventually you
will get the hang of the pedal - chris b.

Make
learning drum
rudiments a hundred times easier by using two
seperate surfaces for the hands; one louder than the other.
One hand will be alot louder than the other and so your
brain only has to listen to half of the rudiment. It also
allows your brain to undertand the rudiment in a musical
way instead of a technical way and therefore quicker to
learn. For example, one half of a paradiddle makes for
a pretty good beat. As long as you continue to hear that
beat, you know your other, quiter hand is doing it right.
Hope that made sense... - Chris

up. Start slowly. Play and repeat first part until relaxed.
Move on to second part keeping hands relaxed, gradually
increasing tempo.
Segue into 7 on each hand
and so on.
Take your time.
Check your
grip and visualise what you are about to do.
As
you can see, the exercise goes from 8 on each hand ending
with the single stroke roll. When you hit single stroke,
you should be really moving. So start slowly and build
your rhythm.
Remember..this is a warm up..have

When practicing drum
rudiments and fills use sylables of words to help
you count the beats in the phrase (example) a triplet

the triplet beats) tip! beverages work really well! (tea.
cofee. lemonade.coca cola etc...) have fun! - Stephen

Use
a dailey drumming
routine that starts with stretching your wrists
and fingers, then goes to dexterity exercises like single
and double paraddidles between your hands and feet,
etc.. I practice at least 3 hours a day and try to always
take 1 day a week off of the set to use only a practice
pad. It helps to refresh your brain because playing
every day will burn it out just like a computer, and
after a day of rest from the set you should be able
to play new patterns in all the styles. Make sure your
throne is not too low. I had mine too low for a few
months and started getting some lower back pain even
though I sit straight up. Your feet should be able to
rest on the pedals and your sticks should be able to
reach everything without leaning uncomfortably far forward.

Right,
double kick drumming with one foot like Nicko McBrain(Iron
Maiden). These will lead to beasty sounding bass drum
triplets. How? Start with a hit your toes at the back
of the pedal and quickly slide your foot up to the front
of the pedal with the ball of your foot. This should result
in an incredibly fast double hit on the bass drum. It
takes PRACTICE. People will think you're playing with
a double kick pedal. Just sit back and chuckle silently
to yourself in your own knowledge. Just in case, listen
to Iron Maiden (especially some of their live stuff.)
Nicko would be proud. - Dick Cheney

Thinking of buying a double bass pedal? Well dont,
try most double bass stuff with one pedal. There may be

the bulk of songs involving double bass action will be

Heal/Toe
technique on the High Hat: Slide up using your heal
of your foot on the HH pedal then followed by your toe,
which is the front part by your toes. This will allow
you to do other things rather then striking the HH with
your stick to give that open/closed sound. Do this every
day 1 min at first then longer you will use muscles that
you normally will never use. - Rachel

If you have the oppertunity try to play marching
percussion, it helps you play more in the center of
the head (snare drums and bass drums) and speed (going
at about 120 bpm (beats per minute) and will help your
chops out in the long run, mainly long parades (like
4 miles or so). Also it will help you out when you play
infromt of a crowd on the side to play up to par and
help the band out. Plus, it would be a great opertunity
to find some people that you can start and band with
or join a band that has formed and needs a drummer.

The
whole heels up approach to drumming is bull. you
may be able to play stuff faster like this but you dont
have the same control as playing heels down. Playing
heels down takes more co-ordination and practice but
pays off. when you play heels up its always loud and
obnoxios and hard to play slow. heels down is also very
easy to learn new patterns suchs as paradiddles and
triplets. if you want immediate spped and power, heels
up. If you want technique control and real power, heels
down. - Alex

Playing
any instrument is about enjoying yourself, it shouldn't
matter whether you're 'technically' a good player, i mean,
it can help, yes, but it's certainly not essential. i've
never had a drum teacher, i was simply shown the basics
by a friend and i took it from there, but it does take
a lot of patience and dedication, and a love of your instrument
:) go nuts and try some crazy fills and solos, but keep
it under control when you need to, play tight and in a
funky groove, and use fills that are simple, with minimal
strokes but interesting patterns. don't worry if you can't
read drum music or you don't know what a friggin paradiddle
or triplet is, just listen to a wide variety of music
and filter it all into a unique playing style. playing
without a teacher also helps you to develop your own unique
style, without it being moulded by someone else, but you
gotta make sure you're not doing anything wrong, so read
drum tip websites like this one :P - big ol' drum-o!
