yo,
ok if you are a begginer, and you wanna play double
bass. then play heel up, and use your front of your foot
where the foot meets the toes. and get comfortable with
what your playing. and dont over play with them as well
because people will think you've had too much coffee or
something. and play on a part of your throne that you
are comfortable with so that you can reach every drum
and cymbal no matter where it is on your kit.take your
time learning things, dont think that since you dont know
how to do something doesent mean that you have to learn
it right away. and get a pair of sticks that you like
and dont settle for anything less than spectacular. l8ter

Struggling
with double bass pedal or dont have your own? A good
way to learn is to try alternating between your floor
tom and bass drum, as soon as you get this rhythm down
you can speed it up and have it sounding like double bass
pedal in no time! So it would be bass - floor tom - bass
- floor tom - bass - floor tom - etc. - Liz

My perspective on drumming,
i drum so i can live out my dream: to be in a band on
go famous, but i see drumming as a sort of car for the
band, you see a drummer keeps the beat and drives it
and if you crassh it then the band goes with you so
a drummer is important. I reckon if you look at drumming
as one whole instrument and not just seperate pieces
then playing will be a whole lot better :D - Macca

Tenor
Drummers... If you play quads, quints, or sextets,
you know that it takes time to learn how to play clean
sweeps (scrapes, swipes, etc.). Especially if you play
on a quadline of more than 3 people, invest in a Vic Firth
Quadropad. and DONT buy the mylar laminates. Playing on
a surface with as much drag as gum rubber will build good
sweeping techniques. And you will gain more control over
your stick heights while diddling and singling which helps
keep a 5-man tenorline from sounding like popcorn. - Josh

Play
lots of jazz and (real)metal- not slipknot or other
bollocks like that. chick webb, gene kroupa, dennis chambers,

For
begining double bass drummers or drummers who are
having trouble getting the hang of things, try , and I
mean try, to play your normal beat for about five minutes,(heel-up!),
then play the key parts such as beats and fills slow for
about 10-15 min or however long you choose(and make it
fun!) remember patience is key. dont get frusturated either.
give it 2-3 days maybe even a few hours! you will get
faster and stronger, faster. oh yeah , if you dont know
how to do the heel up technique its mostly in your heel
and your leg not just your leg. happy drumming?

To
enhance your double bass drumming
first make sure the angle of the pedal is no less than
thirty degrees from the ground, i found that with the
angle less than thirty degrees i was running on them using
every muscle in my leg tiring them out like a work out.
start off slow to the point of your own presicion. play
the high hat or the ride on every 4th. as you do this
make sure your hits on the bass drum are solid, on the
verge of pretty loud. as you play take your focus off
your pedaling on to something else i.e. a picture or a
thought. you will then find your feet and the base drum
develope a complementry reaction, a groove you could say.
ALWAYS keep your thighs loose, relaxed but active. a very
useful excersice is to play your bad foot solo then on
the 8th beat introduce your good foot, repeat this continously
and watch the improvement happen. another tip is to use
a strap to wrap around your foot and pedal. it should
circle from the top of your foot to under the foot pedal
board. this is very useful in playing on the sweet spot
of the pedal while being comfortable playing at top speed.
- mick

Those
with spinal injuries or problems should seek advice
from their doctors before continuing drumming.
If you do continue to play the drums, and you have a
severe injury, you may want to or have to re-set up
your drums to a more comfortable location as not to
strain your back while reaching for a drum or cymbal.
I had to re-set up to do this and found that it was
easier as time followed. I also wear a back brace to
help me with my lower back and I still after all these
years, use a back rest on my throne. And always, ALWAYS
seek help in carrying your equipment and even to set
up and break down. You owe this to your back and your
livelyhood. Keep playing and never give up but always

I've been playing Black and Death Metal for 4 years
now, so I do know what I'm talking about. Your legs
are like a scale when playing double bass. Feet are
ground zero, then you use your ankles, when they get
tired use your knees, and then when they get tired slow
down to 8th notes and play with your whole leg. It takes
a lot of practice and working out to play very fast
with your ankles, but it'll save you much energy for
later. - Congregation of Souls

like to prepare the bigginner drummer by not mentioning
how great you are before you actually accuire the techniques
required for the consistancy a song must have from beginning
to end with feeling and timing tight enough to flow simply
thru imagining the many ideas for a fill or an eyecatcher
combination of movement and footwork. every note has to
be accounted for ... dont finch the small stuff unless
its a oversize cowbell during a chimes part dont imbarrass
yourself by thinking your gonna blow somebody away with
the intention of getting a pat on the back at that point
youve givin yourself away that you arent a very good drummer
at all if that isent bad enough your subject expresses
to all those who wonder if you could be the drumming
prodigy or the drumming parcheesy have dissapline even
if there is another drummer or person behind your drums
who thinks there the shizzle ,,,,,,Mcpeart in town. get
good and dont brag theyll be time to expose your craft,
stay mysterious about your hard hours of pad work and
information leading you towards the band that never had
a clue you were so good your a class act drummer dont
mis judge a person saying that your good untill your good
! Youll know its not to make you feel better and your
feelings wont be hurt because of the truth that maybe
your not excactly doing it right at all . understand your
belief and how hard your willing to work and enjoy the
results of dedicated behind the scenes practice the element
of suprise is key .... youll be most impressive if you
dont give yourself something for your listeners . fellow
musicians, and the friends that never knew you played

I recently discovered wet shoes. The kind you
wear while riding Waverunners or Jet Skis. They are
snug, light, have a thin sole and provide a great amount
of needed traction for the pedals almost eliminating
the problem of your foot creeping up the pedal. The
thin sole gives you great sensitivity when playing.
Worn with a thin pair of socks, they have made drumming
much more comfortable and precise for me. - Scott

it in strips about 1.5 inches wide, removed the backing

If
you are playing an off-beat, and it's little difficult
for you to come back to the normal beat within the timing
then you should move your head along with the original
beat, but this will only work if you'll keep on playing
the original beat, that is of 2 or 4 timing, in your
head. This will help you to play more off in the beat
of 2 or 4 timing. This is a very common problem that
most of the beginners make. - Fahad Fazal-ur-Rehman

Hello!
This site really motivated and encouraged me a lot
to continue and learn more stuff about playing the drums.
I've been playing for 1 year and 6 months (and my band
mates call me drummer gaL). Hehehe..
These are the pieces of advice i can give for now:
1. you must know how to PLAY with the drums. Just play
naturally. You don't need to always guard what you hit
or else you'll NEVER enjoy what you're doing.
2. Don't be conscious if someone is looking. Learn to
relax and not be so stiff with the stick while playing.
3. I believe that practice makes perfect.. (especially
those tiring rudiments..
and also, mix your practice with music)..
4.Just have FUN and don't get intimidated if someone can
play better than you do (i've been through that) because
it'll just pull you back. Look, observe, and learn from
them. Be open-minded. And the most important thing, if
you play the drums, play with your soul and always glorify
God while playing because i believe that playing the drums
for Jesus really rocks because your effort is not going
to be in vain. And also, whatever you do with the drums
(even if you mess up) as long as you PLAY with your soul,
your drumming
will ALWAYS be pleasing to His ears.
Oh, i nearly forgot- ALWAYS keep your feet on the ground..
stay humble..
That's all. I hope the tips i gave are of good help to
those future drummers out there.

Sup,
I play in a band and have been playing drums for a
couple years now and have (not to brag) almost mastered
a single base pedal. the only person who has surpassed
me in speed are the elite drummers(John Bonham, Buddy
Rich, Alex Van Halen) and one of my tips to playing is
to play heel up...where Converse shoes...they are lightweight
and narrow...the pedal will flow eisier. Also "spaz"
your foot as i call it..lift heel up and make your foot
move in short, jerky, motions. this is an amazing twist
on your drum solos and rolls... ~peace~ - JT

Try
writing your own fills and beats out. It helps you

what fans want to hear; creativity, not just really
really fast fills. Anyone can play fast. Be unique.

Don't
put yourself down when you see a better drummer than
you. You'll make yourself less confident and then will
beat yourself up when you do the littlest thing, like
being "A little late on that kick" or "I
could've cracked my cymbal." (not that cracking your
cymbal is a good thing, but...) All you have to do is
tell yourself that everyone has their own strenghts and
weaknesses. Just practice at something and then you'll
get better at it. - Johnny Knoxnille

All you need to do is have fun i remember the first
time my grandma and grandpa heard me play and they were
shocked. I will admit I am a beginner drummer but to tell
you the truth the cheap stuff really works once you get
some nice heads on them. But anyway this one time i was
practicing drums non-stop and my grandparents had come
over without me knowing. After about an hour into it they
came into my room and they had the biggest grin on their
faces i had ever seen and all they could say was how good
i have gotten. Well what i'm really trying to say is i
guess it's not about what other people think about you
and what you do just have fun with playing and if you
make someone smile because of it good job keep it up.

Never
try to sing. It is very, very difficult to sing while
playing. Besides, it can lower the quality of your beat.
Some drummers, like Brandon Saller, of Atreyu, can actually
sing ONLY THE CHORUSES while playing a good beat. But
this takes a lot of practice. So, try to let the singing
to your bass and guitar players. Just concentrate in playing
a good role. Remember the band counts on you to take the
timing of the song. - Charles

I
have had peripheral neuropathy, this makes the nerves
inactive and timeing goes to pot, but I have found if
I practice enough the signals to each part of the body
can be controled with a coordinatin of mind and sight....and
listen of course..anyone with this disease doesn't have
to give up.....it takes a bit longer but is well worth
it. Have lost some control over hands and feet, but I
ain't lost control of my mind. Anyone who has the same
problem, don't give up it will come. Iechyd da - Paul

If your practicing with your band and you drop a stick,
don't stop! If you don't put your stick bag near and will
have to stop, make sure your band knows not to stop. You
can run and grab another and only miss 10 seconds of the
song, rather than having to start the song over. This
will save allot of time, especially if your a beginer.

When
you're playing: While your playing the drums u might
ocme up with sumthing that sounds better than what ur
about to play, when that happens STOP playing and start
over and try it. Dont keep playing because if you keep
playing u will be playing one thing and thinking about
playing another thing and you will get all screwed up.

Keep
a music notepad next to you at all times. There's

If you want to practice sticking patterns without
the noise, use silly putty spread out on a hard flat
surface. The silly putty provides the spring that you
get from a real set. Plus it is about 75 cents or a
dollar. You can also go to the drum shop and buy a portable
drum pad. I is the same thing, except more expensive
and there is mor of it. - Eric

If your bass drum has steel hoops, usually your
pedal will fall off. Get some 2 part liquid metal and
fill the in area on the hoop where your pedal clamps down.
It's tough stuff and won't disintegrate even after multiple
clampings. You only need to fill a small area and you
can grind off any excess. No more chunks of wood! -

If you are trying to learn doulbe bass and your
right handed same thing goes for left handed but opposite
leg, practice using ur left foot alot more than ur right
foot to strengthen it up and to get it faster and eventually
catch up with your right. - Sabo

Another good tip for double bass is using the
snare and ur bass drums or drum. Play a rutiment with
your hands on the snare than on the bass drum with your
feet. then after a while try doing them both at the
same time. This will greatly speed your feet up alot
if you practice alot and use different rutiments. Good
Luck -
